Godly Sorrow is Profitable
“I now rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you were made sorry to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly way, that you might suffer loss by us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death.” (2 Corinthians 7:9-10 WEB)
The Holy Spirit is not the kind of Helper that only talks to you about happy, lighthearted things. Sometimes when it is needed, He speaks words to you directly or through another believer which produces godly sorrow.
He points out an error you are making, not to condemn you, but so that you can repent—demolishing wrong beliefs and replacing them with right ones.
This is for your “salvation”—not limited to salvation from Hell, but also salvation for every situation which you need to be saved from: poverty, sickness, strife, weakness, etc.
If changing your mind about something will result in a profitable outcome for you, the Holy Spirit will allow you to feel godly sorrow. He does not want to see you suffering due to wrong believing, or settling for less than God’s will for you.
On the other hand, when Satan and his demons aim to produce sorrow in you, they want you to be sad in a destructive way. They will use your sorrow to fuel self-condemnation, vengefulness, broken spiritedness, so that it destroys you and others around you.
“Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.” (Hebrews 12:9-11 WEB)
Those who are wise don’t despise the correction born of the Holy Spirit. It is the training given by a loving Father who wants the very best for His children.
